South Kazakh State Medical University

The South Kazakh State Medical University is more commonly known as the South Kazakhstan Medical Academy (SKMA). Located in Shymkent, Kazakhstan, it is a government research university that was established in 1979. It is a popular destination for international students, particularly those seeking to study MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery).

Recognition & Eligibility (especially for Indian students)

  • The university is recognized by WHO and listed in WDOMS. 

  • It is also recognized by the Medical Council of India (now NMC) — so Indian students graduating from SKMA can (in theory) appear for FMGE / NExT. 

  • Eligibility generally requires completion of 10 + 2 (or equivalent) with Physics, Chemistry, Biology (PCB), usually with ≥50% (for general category). For reserved categories (SC/ST/OBC in India), sometimes lower criteria are cited in some sources. 

  • NEET qualification is required (for Indian students) as per current regulations.

 

Programs & Duration

  • The MBBS (General Medicine) programme duration is 6 years overall (usually 5 years of academic work + 1 year internship). 

  • SKMA also offers Dentistry, Pharmacy, and other related medical / health science programs.

 

Hostel facilities

  • The university provides well-furnished and secure hostels, often with separate buildings for male and female students.
  • Amenities include 24/7 electricity, hot and cold water, Wi-Fi, and surveillance cameras.
  • Indian wardens are sometimes available to assist international students.
